IJN I-169
The I-169 was a large submarine that had been part of the Pearl Harbor strike, and continued missions through the war, and as a larger sub, it served as a supply vessel as the US shut down the Japanese merchant forces. The I-169 was not lost during Operation Hailstone, but rather by accident when a hatch was left open when the sub was diving to avoid an inbound airstrike two month after Hailstone. Stuck on the bottom, multiple efforts were taken to raise the sub but eventually, trapped crew perished. Later, the IJN depth charged the sub to keep secrets from falling into American hands, thus the breakup of the sub. Mid-ships sits in about 112' of water at the sand, sloping down to 144' at the stern.
